Five New Listeria Strains to Know

Posted by Zosi Team

Cornell University researchers have identified five previously unknown strains of Listeria in United States soil. “This research increases the set of listeria species monitored in food production environments,” said  Catharine R. Carlin, a doctoral student in food science. “Expanding the knowledge base to understand the diversity of listeria will save the commercial food world confusion and errors, as well as prevent contamination, explain false positives and thwart foodborne outbreaks.”

Of note, the new findings include a novel species, now named L. immobilis, that lacks the ability to move. Previously, mobility was considered common among strains related to L. monocytogenes. This means identification and prevention protocols in food production environments will need to be reexamined on the whole. Get to know more about the five new strains of listeria and what you can do to safeguard your production in the infographic below.
